Prompt, Then Verify: Teaching Research Skills in the Age of AI

National News Literacy Conference

October 9, 2026

Salt Lake City, UT

I’m excited to share that I’ll be presenting Prompt, Then Verify: Teaching Research Skills in the Age of AI at the first-ever National News Literacy Conference, hosted by the News Literacy Project in Salt Lake City. If you’re attending, I’d love to see you in my session!

Our students are turning to AI chatbots the way we used to turn to a search engine. They type a question and get a confident, polished answer in seconds. The tricky part is that confident and correct aren’t always the same thing.

In Prompt, Then Verify, we’ll look at how the research process has changed now that AI is part of the picture. I’ll share practical classroom strategies for using AI where it’s genuinely helpful while building in the checks students need to catch errors, confirm what they’re reading, and grow into stronger researchers.

What You’ll Walk Away With

  • A clear picture of where AI fits in the research process, and where it doesn’t
  • Classroom-ready strategies for teaching students to check AI responses against reliable sources
  • Ways to talk with students about why a polished answer still needs a second look
  • Ideas you can adapt for any grade level or content area

Why This Matters to Me
When I was in the classroom, research meant teaching students how to judge a website. The core skill hasn’t changed, but the tools have. Students still need to ask who’s behind the information and whether it holds up. Helping them build that habit with AI is work I care a lot about, because at the end of the day, it’s about helping kids think for themselves.

Can’t make it to Salt Lake City? If you’d like to bring this kind of learning to your school or district, I’d love to talk. Book a session with me.

Design Authentic Assessments AI Can't Fake

You assigned an essay. A student turned it in. It's polished, grammatically perfect. And you know in your gut they didn't write it. Worse? They didn’t learn anything.
